ACER Capoeira Mundo Capoeira South London

ACM Capoeira South London

A short biography of ACM Capoeira South London

ACM Capoeira South London began as reaction to the stagnation of our existing Capoeira Group ACER.
Principle pupils felt that our Capoeira  wasn’t evolving and keeping true to the traditions of our
Mestre Celso who always taught us that Capoeira is  evolution Capoeira is Improvisation.
Although we learnt a lot about Capoeira South London with our existing group we felt that all progression was
being created by ourselves with very little input from the existing teacher. In fact the primary motivation seemed to be
about creating a financial base for Capoeira South London area rather than developing and establishing the
significant historical conditions particular to our group.

The Establishment of ACM Capoeira South London.

After the departure of key students I felt that I could no longer participate in an environment
where close Capoeira comrades were leaving due to frustration and the particularly bad organisation
that existed with our South London Capoeira group. I also realised that as a teacher I had a lot more to offer students and we could expand our Capoeira South London base within the area.

We decided then to leave our existing group and deal with our Mestre directly and gain his permission
to teach the style of Engenho da Rainha in a truly progressive way in the area. We also felt that as a Capoeira group we didn’t have good relations with other Capoeira groups in the South London region and in London and the United Kingdom as a whole.

Principle students such as Ninjinho, Amazona, Playboi and Berimbau offered me their support and I decided to embark upon the journey to create A.C.E.R. CapoeiraMundo South London. From the onset we had a feeling of liberation and freedom of movement which sadly had been stifled by
the frankly oppressive and dictatorial structure of the original South London group. With a few weeks we had already progressed to level we wouldn’t have have gained in a few years in our existing group. One particular aspect of this progression was the improvement in musical technique. The old group had no musical base or heritage in fact for the most part it was effectively like performing tae kwon do in a roda with the occasional input of music. Now inconceivable structures existed in the old south London group including training without the aid of music!

ACM plans for South London Capoeira

The main issue for Capoeira in South London is integrity. The general consensus seems to be amongst indigenous Brits that although Capoeira is an addictive art with strong traditions , it is utilised by some unscrupulous Brazilians for mainly personal gain. The very same Brazilians also fail to recognise the specific socio economic factors and character of the British practitioners of Capoeira. ACM Capoeira South London plans to bring the sense of honesty and integrity back into Capoeira. With the help of the majority of decent Brazilian Capoeira teachers we are gaining stronger and more direct links with Mestres (Masters) in Brazil and expanding our student base to incorporate all the diverse communities of South London.

We are also seeking to establish women’s only classes and children’s classes and finally senior citizens capoeira classes which will be based on highly ritualised yoga type movements. Here’s a breakdown of the different classes we offer and intend to offer for Capoeira South London in addition to our regular Capoeira classes

Capofit Circuits: Capoeira based fitness circuit classes. This incorporates a set of movements and exercise particular but not specific to Capoeira.

This is a highly beneficial class for dancers, gymnasts and other martial artists who seek to improve core strength for their particular art.

Capoyoga: Capoeira based yoga style movements. A gentler form  of movements  adapted from Capoeira Angola and designed to improve core strength and ability. We are working closely with Yoga experts to develop this interesting direction to our training

Capofight: MMA and UFC type fight based movements using capoeira as a base but utilising mix martial arts. Once again we are working with various experts such as Brazilian jiu jitsu, Selat,Karate and Kung Fu teachers.

CapoFem: Women’s only classes, which will provide a safe space for women to train Capoeira without the need to worry about testosterone charged men creating a feeling of insecurity. Its also an opportunity for women to train together and deal with the specific body requirements of female capoeiristas. In addition to this it will also help those women who due to cultural or political sensitivities do not wish to train in a mixed environment

Capokids: Children’s classes taught by fully CRB checked teachers. Parents will be encouraged to participate and engage in these classes.

Caprobatics: Capoeira acrobatics and floreios classes.  These classes are designed to help Capoeiristas and those people who are attracted to the
more showy side of capoeira. This involves aspects such as extreme kicks and gymnastic movements

ACER Capoeira Mundo Student Testimonials

I have always wanted to try the art of capoeria but have been procrastinating on signing up. I was very intimidated by the kicks and acrobatics which seemed like it would involve my body to move in ways I didn’t think possible. I decided for the New Year of 2010 to step out of my comfort zone and give capoeria a go. I joined Acer Capoeria Mundo in South London and since then have fallen in love with the art, sport and lifestyle of capoeria. The teacher was very supportive and taught me in a way that allowed my body to ease into movements. He was encouraging and always allowed me to see the progress I had made after each lesson. The other students who have been training for years were very approachable and always willing to help me understand a movement, as they would take the time to go through it with me if I had any difficulties. As a traveler, since joining Acer Capoeria Mundo, I have had the great opportunity of playing with groups from around the country and world and can say with great recommendation, that Acer Capoeria Mundo is my capoeria base and home. There are many social events to spend time with other fantastic capoeristas and the training is what I look forward to the most in my week – it is the best way to unwind and feel free at the end of a busy working day. Since joining Acer Capoeria Mundo I have more respect for my myself as I appreciate what it is I can push myself to do. I feel a new sense of self through feeling the vibrant soul of capoeria. I am more than grateful that I signed up with such a fantastic group like Acer Capoeira Mundo in South London. The group and the teachers have allowed me to find my new joy in life.

Perola Negra

After watching Only the Strong I was so enthralled to give capoeria a try. But without any prior martial art or dance experience I had no idea how I would even manage! Lucky enough for me I moved into a house where one of my housemates was training with a group based in South London, Acer Capoeria Mundo. I felt destiny calling and built up the courage to attend my first lesson. I was a little nervous but after meeting the teacher Aloprado I was immediately at ease. He is an amazing teacher to work with as he is so patient and teaches in a way to best suit individual body types and abilities. He encouraged me and saw the natural ability I thought I never had. Everyone in Acer Capoeira Mundo has been so kind and generous and there are definitely no divides amongst abilities, which was something I was afraid of. All the capoeristas are so helpful and there are loads of social events to help keep the group very close knit. I am so glad I watched such an inspiring film and even more excited that I took the chance to try what I have always wanted to. Acer Capoeria Mundo is now my capoeria family and I am thrilled by what I have learnt I can do through martial arts, dance, music, singing, speaking Portuguese and keeping the spirit of Capoeria alive!

Gata Preta

I joined Acer Capoeria Mundo in March 2011 and have not been the same since. I live and breathe capoeria! I was once a person eager to use my body through martial arts but was intimidated by the bulky men I’d see in the gym. I wanted to find a way to stay fit without it feeling like a chore. I gave capoeria a try since as a football fan Brazil always appealed to me. The music, culture and liveliness I saw through the football in Brazil I hoped would extend through to the art of capoeria. I have not been disappointed! Capoeria is loads of fun and you involve yourself with more than just basic kicks. There is a side of dance and music and intricate fighting (something defiantly to impress the ladies with) ;) I have built my confidence and physique without even realizing it! I have met awesome people and would highly recommend Acer Capeoria Mundo to anyone wanting to get in shape and meet a cultured chick! ;)

 Paul ‘Vampiro’

I wanted to quit smoking and partying to do something more useful with my life. I didn’t know how to do it. I signed up with Acer Capoeria Mundo without even thinking it would change my lifestyle. My body toned, I learnt some amazing tricks, I have met amazing people, have a wicked teacher who is so experienced in loads of different areas, and I have stopped smoking, stopped the partying as capoeria keeps me busy, and I have the confidence to approach any situation. Acer Capoeria Mundo Rocks!

 Peter from Wimbledon

If you want to chill out, go camping, play music and fight in an artistic, b-boy sort of way, I would highly recommend signing up to Acer Capoeria Mundo. I have trained with other groups and the style and energy from this group best suits my interest and flare. Everyone in the group has a great attitude to learning and helping each other progress. The teacher helps you add your own touch to making your capoeria yours and it is something to definelty look into for a new workout and passion to pursue. Acer Capoeira Mundo is a brilliant young group!

Why Capoeira Training is Fun

Capoeira Training  is fun and I love it

After trying other sports and martial arts in the past I can honestly say Capoeira Training is an entirely different beast, and in my opinion the most fun. I hope I can articulate why…

Capoeira Training

I enjoy Capoeira Training because I never stop learning. Every week I discover something new about myself, whether it’s a slight improvement in my game, mastering a totally new movement or even just lasting longer at training before gassing out! It never gets stale and it inspires me. I get fitter, faster and stronger almost without realising.

Capoeira Training with ACM in South London fits my ethos perfectly as they’re a progressive group that’s just as passionate about health and fitness as they are about Capoeira itself.

As in all martial arts there is respect between teachers and students but at ACM there’s no pressure or strict regimentation, the motivation and focus is purely on the evolution of each student. Again this appeals to me, there are no barriers to inclusion. It allows people to train within their own limitations, and when they’re ready smash through them usually to their own great surprise.

On a physical level I’m proud of how far I’ve come in the time I’ve been Capoeira Training. Obviously there’s still a long way to go and at times it’s been difficult and frustrating but it’s worth every drop of sweat.

Capoeira Training has also cunningly caused changes on a personal level too, giving me confidence whilst teaching me humility and respect. Sounds naff I know, but nonetheless true, as in my experience humility and respect are traits that are all too often lacking from westernised martial arts groups where arrogance is often mistaken for confidence.

The social aspect was an unexpected bonus as initially I was attracted to Capoeira for the fitness but ended up making some firm friends along the way. It has a huge social scene, so much so that there’s pretty much a Capoeira event on somewhere in the UK every weekend of the year, not to mention the weekend and after class hang outs.

As a Capoerista I’ve visited many places around the world I would never have otherwise ventured, and played Capoeira with complete strangers I would never have met. It’s tons of fun but also addictive. I’m not really one for spiritual stuff but once you get the bug it becomes part of your psyche and it’s unlikely you’ll ever fall out of love with it, but look on the bright side…. there are worse addictions out there!

Capoeira Training is difficult to explain as it’s so much more than just fitness and movements. You take from it as much or as little as you like, it’s up to you. This flexibility and freedom is another reason why it appeals so much to me.

So in a nutshell: I love Capoeira Training, and cherish the friendships and experiences it has given me and I wouldn’t quit for the world. Axé Capoeira!
